Ms Kotka led the girls down a side passage to a small, windowless room with metal filing cabinets along three of the four walls. In the centre of the room were a big laser printer, a shredder and a pile of empty sacks.

“Another student will bring some documents for you to shred,” they were informed. “Put paper in here, press green button, simple. You will not do anything else, you will not play games or mess around. You will shred everything that is brought to you. At the end of the day I will inform you when you can leave.” The teacher kept distractedly patting her headscarf as she delivered these curt instructions, and departed swiftly afterwards, closing the door behind her.

The three friends looked at each other, each wondering how the others would react to this latest downturn in their fortunes. Maya spoke first.

“Have to say it, Jessie – this is another fine mess you’ve got us into. I wish you hadn’t drawn that heart.”

“Whoa, it’s not all my fault! We all agreed to go exploring at night, and we always knew there was a chance we would get caught.”

“Come on you two,” interrupted Ella, soothingly, “we can’t turn on each other. We need to stick together to get through this. And you know – it might actually be a good thing they found the heart and blamed us for it.”

“How could it be a good thing?” asked Maya in surprise.

“Well, they seem to think the only reason we were out of bed was to draw silly pictures on blackboards. If it wasn’t for that, they might dig a little deeper and find out about everything else we’ve been up to. If they guessed we’ve been trying to contact home, and wanting to find out what they’re doing in their creepy lab, we would probably be stuck in this room forever!”

Maya saw Ella’s point, and put an arm around Jessie. “I’m sorry, okay? You’re right, nobody was keener than me to go on last night’s jaunt, and I’m glad we did. And as Ella said, it could be a lot worse.”

“No problem, Double M,” replied Jessie, who liked to give her friends new nicknames whenever the fancy took her. “You know what I’m wondering though – who told nasty old Kotka about our little escapade?”

“I hate to say it,” Maya replied, “but I think there’s a good chance it was Adelina.”

Ella slowly nodded agreement, but Jessie’s face fell. “Adelina?” she asked in amazement. “But she’s our friend! We helped get her out of trouble yesterday morning, and she knows about Ella’s awesome work in shutting down the science class for the next day or two. Why would she tell on us? It was probably one of the boys.”

“They’re in a separate dorm, they couldn’t possibly have seen us unless they were out of bed too – and they would be crazy to admit that to a teacher. Think about it: I know Adelina saw us leave the dorm. Then, she wasn’t around when we were getting dressed and when we went down to breakfast.
