“Talk,” Alyce stopped near the couch and began looking at her hands again. “The purple magic. What the fuck?”

Rabe had no doubt she could hear him, but he wasn’t certain he wanted her to. She was already bound and determined to kill herself in Wonder. If she learned the truth, she would never give up.

“One must broach these things gently.”

“I’m not going to turn into some creature, am I?” She shrieked and the panic in her eyes actually hurt Rabe’s soul.

He could have prevented so much of this. He could have told her who she was when she asked in the woods. Then he could have done so again when he explained why he needed to shield her aura. Instead, he’d lied and now the woman most connected to Wonder in the entire world was terrified of it. And not because six things had almost killed her, but because he’d not been honest.

“I assure you, you are what you have always been and will remain that way.”

“Okay,” she drew the word out. “I do not think I appreciate the way you sounded.”

“Alyce, I don’t want to tell you this next bit, but I will if you swear to me you won’t go rushing out into danger.”

“Why do you care so much?”

He swallowed hard. He had no reason to care this much. He just did.

“Because I do. Because I spent centuries in Wonder doing nothing to protect those who needed it most. You are someone who needs it most because the queens will destroy you.”

“I’m not making any promises and if you think you can just withhold the information and have me stick around, you’re incorrect.”

“Sit,” Rabe tried not to smirk. He found her infuriating, but he could not deny he’d grown rather fond of her spirit.

“There’s a thing about twins that no one understands. Twins are wonder.”

She stared at him as if he now had multiple heads.

“As in from Wonder. Every twin to ever walk the human world traces their heritage back to The Twins of Wonder – two idiots who thought it would be fun to spark multiples in women. They bedded hundreds of humans, all producing twins.”

He’d expected Alyce to recoil, but she sat perfectly still. Rabe wasn’t even certain if she understood what he was getting at.

“Well, keep going.” She huffed.

“Twins are the only way the queens can retain their youth. They do not take just any souls, but only the souls from twins. You have a unique aura that is more Wonder than human, and when you get close to a doorway, the fucking sky lights up like a dinner bell.”

“And that’s why they took my sister.”

It wasn’t a question, but Rabe nodded anyway, trying to ignore the way the heavy sorrow in her words tried to drown him as well.

“And it’s why you can do what you just did. Everyone born of Wonder has a gift. Many who are also human will never find theirs, but you came to Wonder. You stayed. And you let your emotions rule you.
