Tatia and the Ship

Tatia had no trouble finding Valith’s ship. Smoke rose from the hulk in a dozen places, climbing serpentine into the sky. With every break in the trees she spotted it, summoning her on. It helped to gaze that way. The jungle unnerved her. The place was thick and virile, covering the land in a wash of greenery. Trees hung strange vines low from thick fronds, and the carpet of moss on the ground rose and fell in strange undulations.

She could smell the smoke of the crash when a flash of metal caught her eye. She slowed her speeder, the buzz of its grav engine falling to a hum. The glint repeated, the heavy movements of some shadows catching her eyes. She tapped her speeder, coasting it forward warily until she was close enough to see.

She caught her breath in shock. Before her lay a glade swallowed in fungal growths. They clawed at the trunks and swelled from the branches, carpeting the ground in grotesque shades of browns and yellows.

But it was the men who made her shudder in horror. Men in the crude garb of pirates moaned and twitched on the ground. Thick, scabrous growth of fungus clung to their bodies, throbbing across their flesh. One man raised his head spotting her. The pirate whimpered, reaching up a hand, as if begging for help.

Tatia gripped her blaster, but didn’t fire. She would only draw whatever horrors waited in the glade. She swung her rifle back onto her shoulder and revved the engine, speeding away. A moaning cry followed her, sending chills down her spine.

It wasn’t far from there to the Vulkrin. She glided out of the foliage, flinching at the brush of the leaves. She slowed, halting as she beheld the ruin of the pirate’s ship. Its nose was buried deep in the marshy soil like some great beast brought down by the hunter. Ribs of struts showed where armour plating had been torn away. Its engines jutted from the deep furrow the jagged ship had plowed into the ground, antennae and turrets twisted and warped, blackened and steaming from the heat of re-entry.

Tatia remained where she was for a long moment, watching for movement. But the wreck was silent, save for the soft susurrations of the jungle as it stirred in the lazy wind. Leaving her speeder under cover, Tatia dismounted, swinging her rifle about. It settled against her shoulder with firm familiarity, chamber humming as it charged, and she started off.

She darted from cover to cover, creeping closer to the ruined vessel. There were enough ways in thanks to the holes punched through the armoured shell of the ship. She chose one near the engine, where the Light Core would be. Holding her breath, she darted across the divide and scrambled up the sloping hull, her feet banging on the durasteel before she slipped inside of the wreck.

She stopped there, taking things in, panning the barrel of her blaster warily about. A corridor lay before her, red emergency lights glowing across the buckled passages.
