THIRTEEN YEARS AGO
âPlease mom. Jaxon just bought a new guitar and I kind of want to see him embarrass himself.â Hollis shrugged her shoulders excitedly with a goofy smile plastered on her face as her mom leaned into the oven.
The smell of meats and cheeses filled the air as her momâs famous lasagna was put to bake.
âHollis, dinner starts in thirty-five minutes. Canât you wait until after dinner?â Her mom gave her an unsure look. But Hollis didnât give up. She knows that Jax had been asking for a guitar for a while now and she really wanted to be the first one to hear him practice something on it.
âMom, you know Jaxon has different friends now. Heâs in high school, remember? Heâs probably going to hang out with them tonight and I donât think heâll have time for me this weekend.â She didnât intend to let her sadness show, but it was inevitable. She didnât like thinking about how Jax might be moving on to a different friend group, or a different life in general. One that might not include her.
But he had been her best friend for so long, she wasnât ready to give him up.
âOkay, but you need to be back here in thirty minutes to help set the table. Got it?â Her mom turned to wash her hands as Hollis squealed.
âThanks, mom!â She didnât waste any more time and bolted out the front door and across the street to Jaxonâs house.
She knocked at the front door and waited for Delanie to answer.
âHey sweet girl, heâs in his room.â She smiled at her, and Hollis squeezed past to run up the stairs.
Before she even got to his door, she could hear the sounds of the string instrument echoing off the hallway walls, and he soundedâ¦kind of good.
She peeked her head around the corner and watched him for a few minutes. He had a music sheet out in front of him as he sat crisscrossed on his bed. She remembered thinking that he looked way more grown up this way and that thought also made her kind of sad but then she realized she was just being stupid. Everyone needed to grow up eventually. Just because she was twelve and he was sixteen didnât mean that he was going to leave her behind.
Jax started strumming his fingers across the stings of his guitar again, a pick between themânot noticing that he was being watched. He focused on what was in front of him as he was trying his best to get the song just right.
Heâd been trying to learn the same song for weeks now, and he was so close to perfecting it. It kind of meant something to him, and the moment he got the guitar, he knew what song he wanted to learn first.
Hollis walked into his room and got close enough to alert him of her presence without scaring him and the second he saw her, his smile curled beautifully across his face.
âAbout time,â he said to her as he scooted his music over and patted the space next to him, allowing her to sit.
