Chapter 11
âRun!â I yelled, and the girls broke out into a sprint.
The crowd leapt out of the way in front of us, and panic started to break out inside the cavern.
Cleo led the way as we tore over the floor, and everyone pointed at us and gasped. I spun around to see if the bald man was within shooting distance, but there were way too many marketgoers weaving in and out around him.
âFuck,â I hissed as I followed Cleo toward a dark tunnel in the back right corner.
It was right at the end of the farmer stalls, and the animals beside us were going wild. Screeches and snorts rang out as we raced past, and it felt like every pair of eyes in the market were on us.
Getting my women out was my number-one priority. We needed to leave this bustling cavern before anyone else decided to join in on the trophy hunt. People would do desperate things for money, and I didnât want to find out how many would be willing to offer up the girls for their share of the coins.
âAlmost there!â Cleo gasped as we raced toward the tunnel. âIs the man still chasing us?â
I glanced back to see the gleam of his bald head bobbing amongst the crowd, and he snarled every time the sea of people parted enough to get a glimpse of his face. There was no way I was going to leave without killing this asshole. He was not going to live to see another trophy hunting day.
âHeâs on our tail,â I said. âBut we need to get out of this crowd before I can shoot him. I donât want to risk anyone else getting hurt.â
We finally reached the end of the stalls, and Cleo shot through the dark tunnel as we trailed behind her. Then I looked back to see that half the marketplace was pointing at us as the bald man continued to run.
âOkay,â I said as the darkness enveloped us. âIâm going to deal with this fucker before we leave.â
The tunnel was only dimly lit by the occasional torch, and I gestured for the girls to press themselves against the wall once we had turned a sharp corner. Kali pulled Hobble close as they crouched down in one of the darkest spots of the cave.
I took our ear protection out of the bag, because I knew the echo of gunfire inside this cave would be deafening. The girls slipped theirs on, and Kali pressed her hands over Hobbleâs ears.
Chatter and gasps from the market carried through, but nobody seemed to want to try and follow after us. Maybe our reputation as deadly outlaws was stronger than peopleâs desire for money. Word about the banshee slaughter might have spread, too.
But I knew the bald man would come, and I was going to be ready for him. I clutched my rifle as I waited in the dark with my heart pounding. Fiery rage burned in my chest at the thought of some fucker wanting to catch my women.
