Chapter 8

“Take this you must be hungry,” Vincent said, handing Aaron a greasy bag of baked goods from the back of the car.

“Considering that people are so damn fond of drugging me I think I’ll pass,” Aaron said, still pouting.

Vincent couldn’t hold back laughter. “I can assure you that these are not laced with anything but snot from the hands of whoever made them.”

Aaron made a face. “Thanks, but I’ll pass.”

“Just take it,” Vincent said. “If I wanted to drug you I wouldn’t have brought you back to consciousness.”

“What’s in it anyway?”

“Muffins,” Vincent said. “Blueberry muffins. And I assure you there’s no snot, I bought them from a good place.”

“I hate muffins. And I hate fucking blueberries! Why the fuck have you brought me on this stupid road trip, Vince?”

Vincent tossed the bag in the backseat. “Suit yourself.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Here’s the thing Aaron,” Vincent said. “Carson is after you. And Eric works for him and would do anything to please that guy. And the only thing Carson wants is to put you in a grave, do you understand me now?”

“It doesn’t sound like anything I can get away from, Vince.”

“Not if you don’t even give it a try!” Vincent said. “And why’re you being so arrogant, I’m only trying to save your ass.”

“You don’t get it,” Aaron said and went silent.

Vincent continued to drive but he knew what might be going through Aaron’s head. “Is it that hard to be around me?” he asked.

“Yes, Vince. It’s fucking impossible!”

Vincent had no idea what to say to that. He knew he couldn’t blame Aaron for feeling this way. Just because he had tried to save him from Carson and Eric didn’t give him the right to suddenly expect gratitude and in truth it wasn’t gratitude he needed anyway. He simply needed Aaron not to hate him. But he knew he couldn’t expect that from someone he had routinely tortured and kept locked up and god knows what he had been through even after he had gotten out of that place. Vincent had done nothing to help him.

“Can you just tell me where we’re going?”

“Will you eat the muffins?”

“No.”

“Then, no. I can’t tell you, Aaron.”

Aaron glared at Vincent. “You’re an asshole, you know that?”

“Well aware.”

Silence as Vincent tried to keep his eyes on the road.

He caught Aaron glancing at the bag in the backseat.

“So, I eat those stupid muffins and you tell me where we’re going?” Aaron asked.

Vincent could almost laugh again. “You have my word.”
