Arbore

Pop 1200

Arbore () rests 50km south of Weyto on the Turmi road and remains a traditional village with only a few scattered modern buildings. The Arbore people are a mixed bunch, with ancestry linking back to both the Omo Valley and Konso highlands. With their beads and aluminium jewellery, they almost resemble the Borena people. Locals outside the village know it as ‘mosquito town’. To escape the notorious pests many Arbore sleep on platforms high in their houses rather than on the ground.

To visit an Arbore village, a guide must be hired through Arbore Grevy’s Zebra Local Guide Association ( GOOGLE MAP ; %092 601 1754; Arbore). It charges some of the highest fees in the valley (Birr350 per vehicle and Birr200 for the guide), even though visits are usually less than an hour. Guides speak minimal English.

There’s no public transport along this road, and not much traffic at all since it’s actually faster to drive the long way between Konso and Turmi via Key Afer. Additionally, there are some dry riverbeds that can fill and block the route when it rains.
