Located inside the achingly trendy Opposite House Hotel, Mesh has been designed to within an inch of its life – white bar, mirrors, fancy light fittings and mesh screens separating its different areas – but the effect isn’t overpowering and it can be fun on the right night. The lychee martinis here are justly popular. Thursday is gay night.

With its large wood-decked open terrace, pavilion and water features, the Park Hyatt’s 6th-floor drinking spot beats other swish hotel bars come summer. It would be a calm, almost serene, space were it not for the crowd of flush locals and expats who assemble here. The cocktails are decent without being Beijing’s best and there's live music and DJs.
