Chapter Four

The third calling bird showed up on Christmas Eve, and he came in with a bang. Literally, it was the banging in her chalet that woke her up. She sat up and looked over the edge of the bed to the younger man sitting on the floor.

He brushed his dark curls away from his face. “Hey, you’re up, I’m Pete or Peter, whichever one you want to use.” He smiled up at her.

“Like Spiderman, Peter Parker?” Lola asked.

“Who?”

She shook her head. “Never mind—how old are you?”

Pete grinned. “How old are you?”

“I’m 37, and you look like you are at least ten years younger than me,” she said bluntly.

“Don’t let this baby face fool you.” He laughed. “Trust me, I’m older than I look, I have you beat by at least a thousand years or so.”

“Really, you and your brothers are that old?” Lola asked and slid her feet from her bed. “You guys really need to show up when I’m not asleep. I keep greeting you in my pajamas.”

“And, very nice pajamas they are. I can’t wait to see what’s under them,” Pete murmured.

“Dear God, I’m going to be a cougar,” Lola muttered.

He gave her a questioning look. “A predatory, wild animal?”

She sighed, “It’s what they call an older woman sleeping with a younger man.”

“But, I’m older than you,” he pointed out.

Lola shook her head. “You don’t look it, and no one out there will believe it anyway.”

Pete stood. “What do you care what anyone thinks? I sure as hell don’t.”

Lola assessed the young man. Okay, I need to stop thinking of him like that. But, looking at him, you would think he’s a 25 year-old surfer from California. He didn’t even look like he had ever grown a beard in his life. He had a nice body, though. Like Chase, he showed up in red pants, but his had the white fur-lined cuff and black suspenders over his bare, smooth chest. His abs seemed to go on forever, and like his brothers, he had that ‘V of doom’ that went into his pants. While he looked young, he was definitely appealing, and Lola had no problem living out that cougar fantasy.

“I’ve met Chase, Grimaldi, and now you,” Lola said. “What are you bringing to the table, Pete?”

“A sense of adventure.” Pete held up his hand, and a snowsuit appeared in pink with purple stripes down the side. He pointed to the floor, and that’s when she noticed the skis. “We are going down the Grand Canyon slope.”

“Are you crazy?” Lola asked. “I’ve skied like twice in my entire life.”

He moved with the energy of a jackrabbit, and in seconds, she was in his arms. Pete kissed Lola long and hard. “Don’t worry, I won’t let you fall.”

“Uh-huh, until I end up broken in the snow.” Lola took the outfit and walked to the bathroom. “I’ll be out shortly.”

In five minutes, Lola was dressed, and they were walking with skis toward the lift. She was apprehensive, but Pete had a way of talking that made her feel like she could do anything.
