Chapter 12

After dropping Nic and Jen off at her house and being informed that they were skipping Sewing Circle in favor of date night, I wandered back to Gran’s house to meet up with her and Hailey. During the week, Gran picked Hailey up from school while I worked, and took her either to my house or hers. Fridays she was always at Gran’s, and I would meet them there after work to spend some time with Hailey before going to the Sewing Circle. Uncle Flynn, my mother’s brother, watched Hailey while Aunt Helen, Gran, and I all went, and I was pretty sure they were sneaking ice cream on the side, though both of them denied it.

But tonight, it turned out that Hailey had been invited over to her new friend, Ava Jones's house. Good for her, since I was convinced that I had permanently scared her father away. Either I looked less neurotic than I felt, or they were trying to give Hailey a sane place to hide. I refused to look too closely at it.

I helped Gran with her assigned food, macaroni and cheese, which she added no spice or flavoring to, at all. She insisted that the flavor came from grating the cheese fresh. That and the butter and bread crumb topping that she added. Since my life as a dressage trainer, and general horse minion, had left me with no advanced cheese grating skills, I was left with several skinned knuckles and a tense stomach that I quickly stressed into a full-on stomachache.

Everything boiled over as we headed to the truck, loaded down with food. Aunt Helen had decided to meet us at Gladys’s since Uncle Flynn wasn’t around, so it was just the two of us. And the potential of Brecken’s sister. My boyfriend’s sister. I wasn’t as ready to use those words as I thought I was.

“Maybe I shouldn’t go tonight.” I’d known Julia a day, and already I had insulted her and had last night’s failure of a conversation. She’d seemed to enjoy it at the time, but what if she realized I hadn’t been joking when I told her I was crazy? What if she decided not to like me with more contact?

“Oh, you’re coming,” Gran responded without even looking at me. “Jen’s not coming, and Julia needs someone she knows.”

“Julia seems like a nice girl. She’ll make new friends.”

“Larklyn Davis, get in that car.”

There was no escape.

“What if Brecken’s sister doesn’t like me?” I didn’t look at her. That way I didn’t have to see the disappointment in her eyes.

“She met you already and she likes you just fine.”

“But what if she changes her mind?”

“She won't.”

“But what if she does?” Blake’s mother might have done more damage to my psyche than I’d previously realized. Good thing Blake didn’t have a sister, too.

“Larklyn. Please take a good look at me.” Gran’s voice was hard, forcing me to glance up.

I waited, scanning her face, hoping for whatever pearls of wisdom she was going to pass down from her generation to mine.
