God is beloved in our lives — not a subject to be studied, but a mystery to be appreciated and cherished. We might learn about God by studying theology, but we come to know God only by “faith seeking understanding.” In other words, whatever we might learn about God is insufficient. Although learning facts might give us some insights, we can understand God only in loving relationship. If we study God’s word, we might receive information. If, however, we listen and cherish the beloved word of God, we have the potential to become wise.

Spiritual Exercise

Reflect today on those in your life whom you have followed spiritually. Why have you followed them? Why have you believed them? Do you believe because they wield institutional power? Do you trust them because their credentials have dazzled you? Have these decisions been good for you?

Now, imagine yourself to be a first-century person who is following Jesus. Why would you follow him? What kind of credentials does he offer? What makes him attractive to you?
