9 TOAST

Cam

I was up before the other two the next morning. I had decided that a large breakfast was much needed, and although Gabe was learning how to cook, he’d been sound asleep even as the sun rose.

I felt an ache in my heart for him, but it was the healing kind. It was the kind that hurt in a good way— because seeing someone I loved so much start to truly heal was…amazing.

There weren’t any words I could find to truly describe it.

And while I was still learning Seth, I’d seen that hole in his chest start to heal too.

The three of us were a mess but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I stretched my shoulders for a moment, letting my wing spread out completely. I stood still for a moment, fighting the urge to feel sad.

It was during the moments that I was alone where I was always scared I’d fall down again.

I waited for a couple moments and found that for once— I was okay.

I had told Seth about my wing last night at dinner, while Gabe was gone. We’d talked about the Barista, about what had happened with the Orc and his human mate.

About Lucifer.

I thought about Lucifer as I started the pot of coffee and pulled out a pan to cook in. Gabe hated him, for reasons I would never blame him for, but sometimes I didn’t think Lucifer was that bad.

I thought he was misguided. I thought that his power corrupted him. But, there had been a time where he had been good.

I had known the Barista for a long time. I’d know him when he had other names, although we had never been close until the last century or so. And still, we weren’t close like he was with a couple of his other creature friends.

But I did know him.

I did know that what happened in the forest hadn’t been what he wanted.

When he had taken my wing, I knew he hadn’t wanted to.

We’d had no choice.

But fuck. Fuck. Why did it have to happen that way? I missed flying. I missed feeling free. And while I still had all of my other abilities, the one I loved most had been taken away.

With a deep breath, I let out a sigh and then gathered up food from the fridge. Omelettes and toast were on the menu, and I was determined to have it ready before Seth and Gabe were up.

I sank into the rhythm of things, enjoying the little moments. Menial tasks had always been below me until I had broken away from certain creatures in the world. I’d found peace in simply living.

I liked my little cottage in the woods. I liked enjoying breakfast with my mate, and now mates. I liked not having to kill or worry about being killed anymore.

Fuck, I’d really become more human than anything at some point.

Within thirty minutes, I had breakfast ready and heard the stirrings of Gabe. I could feel that Seth was still sleepy, which made sense.
