Chapter Fourteen

The nachos weren’t as pretty after Speed took them out of the oven and added more toppings but he was enjoying himself. He was eating at the stove from the pan and was on his second beer when the doorbell rang.

“What?” Speed called, irritated. He smeared a mound of chips, cheese, and chicken through the puddles of guacamole and sour cream, then jammed it all in his mouth. He grunted at the doorbell when it rang again. Speed took a disgruntled gulp from the bottle to wash it all down. The doorbell rang again but Speed just swore at the nachos. “I’m obviously not answering so come in or go away.”

“I’d excuse your poor manners if I thought it was the grief but you’ve always been an insufferable dick,” Lavender said wearily from behind Speed.

“Fuck!” Speed muffled a shriek as he jumped and spun. “Why did you have to—!” He choked as he swatted at Lavender. He allowed it and grimaced as he leaned back and scanned Speed.

“It’s even worse than Blake let on,” he said, clicking his teeth at Speed.

“You could have called. I would have saved you the time and told you I was a mess.”

“I wanted to see it for myself,” Lavender replied but he took no joy. His brows pinched as he frowned at Speed. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m worried and I…feel sorry for you, Speed.”

“What?” Speed barked and dropped his nacho. “Don’t you pity me. I don’t want it and I don’t really care if you feel sorry for me. I don’t care about much of anything at the moment.”

“I don’t believe you,” Lavender said, resting against the counter behind him. He crossed his ankles elegantly and raised a brow at Speed, daring him to be honest with himself. Speed narrowed his eyes at Lavender.

“Maybe I do care a little.” But Speed found that he cared a lot, actually. He had liked being the enigma and the even ground he’d found himself on with Lavender after they’d made peace. Lavender’s disappointment stung. “I keep thinking I’ll snap out of this soon and that it can’t last. But I wake up feeling like hell and like I murdered the person I used to love and trust most in the world. I haven’t figured out how I’m supposed to let that go and live my life like he isn’t gone.” His eyes stung and blurred. He sniffed as he raised his beer to Lavender and Speed took a long drink.

Lavender rubbed between his brows and sighed. “Fuck, this is so wasted on Frank Leary,” he said under his breath. “I might grieve like this over Lane or Aiden but he was a terrible friend, Speed. You offered him a lifetime of love and loyalty and risked everything to save your friendship. But none of that mattered to him.”

“Don’t you think I know that?” Speed sneered, bitter at himself all over again for loving Francis far more than he deserved.

“You worked so hard
