Chapter Sixteen

“Okay, I'm heading out now,” John said, as he started the cruiser's engine. “I shouldn't be too long.”

“It's freezing,” Tommy replied over the radio, and his teeth could be heard chattering. “I hope you bring some stuff you can use to keep warm, because it seems like we're in for another night of real bad weather.”

“Yeah, I figured that,” John muttered, steering the car around the side of the station and past the parked cruisers. “I'm still not leaving the site unguarded overnight. Have there been any developments this evening?”

“What kind of developments?”

“With the site,” he said, slightly frustrated by the fact that he was having to remind his deputy. “Has anything happened?”

“Just more snow,” Tommy replied. “I've seen bad weather round here, but never quite like this. And never for this long. It's like this cold snap just moved in and refuses to let go.”

“Yeah, well, I was warned the climate could get a little unpredictable up here,” John murmured, glancing over his shoulder for a moment before turning to look again, “and -”

Before he could finish, the front right hand side of the vehicle bumped against the edge of the post marking the limit of the parking lot. Frustrated, John hit the brake pedal for a moment, before turning to see that Greg was smiling and waving from the large open doorway leading into the mechanic's garage.

“I'm not a bad driver!” John protested, even though he knew the other man couldn't hear him. “It's the ice!”

He watched as Greg headed back inside, out of sight; part of him wanted to go after the guy and press his point, but he let out a heavy sigh as he realized that there really wasn't any point.

“Yeah, ice is tricky,” Tommy said over the radio, evidently having heard the whole thing. “You'll get used to driving on it, you just need to give yourself a little time. And you might not believe this right now, but in the summer the weather up here's gorgeous, it's almost like you're in a completely different place. Anyone can drive around on the roads round Sobolton in the summer.”

“I'm not a bad driver!” John insisted, although he knew that there was no point letting his irritation show. “I'm on my way out there now, so just hold tight.” He leaned out the window to make absolutely sure that this time he was clear of the post, and then he eased the cruiser out of the parking lot. “I don't know exactly how you guys used to do things round these parts, but now that I'm in charge we're going to do everything by the book. After all, a little discipline never hurt anyone.”

Looking both ways along the road, he was briefly distracted by the lights of the diner in the distance. A woman was just in the process of opening the door and making her way out, heading down the steps at the front; for some reason the sight of this woman caught John's attention, and he watched her for a few extra seconds before realizing that he was wasting time.
