While waiting for the food to arrive we spend a fair amount of time doing those ridiculous things that new couples do in public: staring into each other’s eyes, holding hands, laughing for no reason. I see why people do this kind of crap now—I can’t help myself. And I feel happier than I have felt since... ever.

But after our food arrives and breaks the flow, once I take my eyes off him, once our fingers are no longer entwined, I start wondering if I’m wrong about what he meant. What if I misunderstood? We kissed and fooled around a bit, but what if all that means something more to me than it does to him? What if he thinks of me as a “friend with benefits?” I don’t want to be a fuck buddy.

“You look worried,” Jesse says, smoothing out the wrinkle lines on my forehead. “There. All better.” He grins for a moment. But then he frowns as my wrinkles reappear. “What is it? What imaginary anxieties are you concocting?”

I take a breath. “I like that you are with me now. But I don’t know what to expect now that we are... together? Are we? Together? Is that what you want?”

Jesse scoots over so he is nearly sitting in my lap and puts his arms around my neck. “Of course that’s what I want. How is it that no one scooped you up long ago, darling? You are hot as hell, an amazing kisser—not to mention your magical hands—ever the gentleman, and apparently the most romantic person on God’s green Earth.”

I shake my head impatiently. “I know you are moving back. And we will be roommates. And also have sex. But what does that mean to you? I need to know. What am I to you? What are we? I need you to say out loud.”

“Oh... you mean the b-word?”

“Bitch?” I say reflexively.

Jesse laughs. “At least this unusual case of nerves hasn’t blunted your delicious sarcasm. Let me make things very clear and eliminate any confusion on your part. “You are my boyfriend,” he whispers in my ear. “And I am your boyfriend.” He places a kiss just behind my earlobe. I think the people at the next table can hear my heart thundering. Then he stops and looks up at me with a grin. “Although I have also been called a bitch—”

“I don’t share.” I interrupt him.

Jesse tilts his head and raises one eyebrow.

“If we are bitches,” I say, causing him to choke. “I don’t share. With other people I mean, I want you to have friends. Lots of friends. I want you to be yourself and not be afraid.” I don’t want to be Ewan. “But I don’t want you to be with anyone else. For sex, I mean.”

Jesse laughs until his body is quaking and tears are streaming down his face. “I love every damn thing about you,” he says when he can catch his breath. “Sweetie, let me be very clear: I am yours, and yours alone.
