In addition to the instances of naḥt-words included in the preceding discussions, present-day scientific Arabic reveals a number of other types of constructions based on the same principle (naḥt) and which may be distinguished from one another on the basis of certain characteristics. Section 3.3.4 provides a classification of these types as well as an account of their potential and practicability in the language. Before we start this discussion, however, we need a brief account of the term âset combinationâ which will occur frequently in the following pages.
Set combinations
We have frequently used the term âmultiword lexical unitâ to designate those combinations of words which are capable of functioning as single wholes and may therefore be said to convey a lexical meaning. In other words, as far as their designation of segments of the extra-linguistic world is concerned, these combinations are on a par with lexical units consisting of one word only. They have the characteristics that they are not created by the speaker on the spur of the moment, they do not vary with the circumstances, and their frequency of occurrence is not limited. In this way, these more-than-one-word single units are set apart from what may be described as âfree combinationsâ which we create ad hoc to suit the purpose which we happen to want to fulfil, and which, by virtue of the fact that they derive their meanings from that of single combined words, cannot be said to function as wholes or convey a lexical meaning. A useful and economical term to designate the first type of combination, i.e. more-than-one-word one unit, is âset combinationâ (Zgusta, 1971, pp.l40f.), which is applicable to such designative multiword Arabic units as:
