Francine must have been listening for the clatter of the wagon because she burst out of the back door to greet me as I pulled the wagon toward the garage. "Did you sell anything?" she asked, and then stopped to stare at the wagon. "You sold everything?" she exclaimed. "Maddy, I can't believe it!"

"Yep. Turns out not everybody is suffering from the Depression. Lots of people on South Street were glad to have your fresh-baked pies. And some of the customers even knew what quiche is."

"Well, I'm surprised at that. But that's good. Maybe I will get some new customers. Put the wagon back in the garage and let's celebrate. Oh, I hope you don't mind having a quiche for dinner?" Francine said.

"What?" I teased. "You kept back something I could have sold?"

"Yes. My mistake," Francine said. "Now I'm afraid we'll be forced to eat it."
