An Artistic Heart

I don’t get much sleep. Once Orrin is tucked in, Glenna, Mommy, and Pap head upstairs too. I ask whether I can stay up a while longer and keep the lantern downstairs with me. I hold my breath, expecting Mommy to object to the cost of the oil I’ll burn, but she is too distracted to care, and luckily, though Pap raises a questioning eyebrow, he decides not to pursue his curiosity.

I lay the fabric from Great-Aunt Exie out on the table and set one of the irons on the stove to heat. Then I carefully fold the fabric and press along the folds, giving me lines to cut along. I use the scissors Mommy keeps on the top shelf of the pie safe to cut sixteen squares, then set in to hemming two as samples for Ceilly. With slow, careful stitches, I sew my way around the four edges of each hankie. As I do, I think of Pap saying at dinner that when he brought the money to the hospital the doctoring folks said Clint might “turn a corner” tomorrow. Pap explained that means that the infection-fighting medicine might show strong signs of working. But that word “might” worries me a good deal as I pull the thread in and out through the hems.

When I finish my stitching, I slip up to my bedroom and fetch my notebook back downstairs. I turn my worry into words on a new page that I title “Treating Bad Burns.” But other than noting what Pap said about “deep wound cleaning” and the medicine that flows straight into Clint’s body to fight pain and infection, I know nothing I can write. So instead, I write down my list of questions.
