Electroencephalogram (EEG) Changes

Studies of EEG patterns over the menstrual cycle yield inconclusive results (see Table 4). All used a within-subjects design where the same women were tested at different cycle phases.

Becker, Schwibbe, and Wuttke (1981) pursuing EEG and other changes reported by Creutzfeldt et al. (1976) and Wuttke et al. (1976) made further studies which suggest that small changes in psychophysiological responses and simple psychomotor performance may be connected with changes in body temperature rather than specific gonadal hormones. Progesterone increases body temperature. However, they found similar changes in performance in males injected with a pyrogenic substance. However, while Stenn and Klinge (1972) found a low, but reliable, correlation between arm movement and body temperature for women, the relationship did not hold for their small sample of three men.
