Chapter Eight

The doctor shuts off the camera, and I see him pick up a radio. “Warden, it’s done. You can come pick up the video.”

There’s some static before the warden’s voice comes through. “Excellent. They will be delighted to watch it. Thank you, doc, and your job is secure.”

“Did you want to see her?” The doctor asks.

“No, hook her up to a radio collar and send her to the pens. I’ll visit her tomorrow in the dairy.”

“Okay.”

“You heard the warden, Westin. Set her up and let her get some rest.” The doctor says. “I have some paperwork to do. I’ll leave you to it.”

“Do you need help?” The nurse asks Westin.

“Nah, I can deal with her.” Westin says and the nurse nods before they both leave.

“Okay, let’s get you a new collar, and you can find your pen. I’m sure you’re tired.” He says and removes the collar around my neck.

He grabs another thicker collar that makes a ringing sound when he holds it up. It has a cow bell hanging off the front, and the inside is lined with small prongs. When he places it around my neck, the prongs press into my skin. It feels odd but doesn’t hurt.

“This collar is linked to your pen number and the dairy and breeding arena. It beeps once when you are expected to return to your pen, twice for the dairy and three times for the arena.”

That’s easy enough to remember.

“Those are the only areas of the prison where cows are allowed to go. If you try to deviate from those areas, you will receive a shock. I’m sure you’ll figure it out, even dumb cows catch on fast.” He smirks at that.

He makes quick work of unhooking me from the frame before setting me on the floor on my hands and knees.

“Cows walk on four legs. If your collar goes higher off the floor than my waist, you’ll get a shock.”

They really want me to feel like the animal they turned me into. I shuffle forward on my hands and knees, testing out my balance. It’s awkward and I accidentally bump my snout on the corner of the table when I turn my head to watch Westin pull on a rope. A door slides up in the wall next to me, revealing a cattle chute.

“Good, little hucow. You’ll catch on, now shoo,” he taps me on the ass and I jump forward into the chute. “Move along until you hear a beep. That’ll be when you reach your pen. You’re separated from the general herd and housed with others like you.”

He points upward. “The guards patrol the chutes from the platforms above you.” I look up and notice the metal walkways a few feet above me. “Don’t try anything or the guards will punish you.” He slides the door closed without a goodbye and I move slowly forward.

In the narrow chute, my shoulders brush the sides as I crawl. The stone floor below me is dirty and I can tell it’s never been washed in years.
