At two, we all filed into the conference room and were introduced to the board. They were surprisingly serious, I thought, given the product; then again, male enhancement was big business. Literally. Phillip was up first; he gave the overview of our agency and the knowledge and experience we brought to the table. He spoke of Hannah’s extensive experience in market research and mine in consumer behavior. He spoke for just under twenty minutes before handing the floor over to Hannah and me.

I drew in a deep breath to calm my nerves, which were all over the place. Hannah kicked off our presentation with our tagline, then launched into the current market trends and focus groups that had been conducted for Brillig and Eman. She then passed it on to me for the details of the consumer responses and data.

For the next forty minutes, Hannah and I expertly navigated our marketing plan. There were no missteps – verbal or physical – and we hit every important piece we’d planned. From the look on Phillip’s face, we had nailed it. The rest of the room remained stoic, but I knew we had impressed them. At the end, we opened the floor for questions. In true board of directors’ fashion, they went over every detail- ROI, initial investment, did we truly understand the target clientele, etc.—and we were ready with the answers. The whole thing had gone exactly as we had planned.

For the next two hours we sat with smiles pasted to our faces and listened to Brillig’s first quarter projections. Even Megan, who’d had little involvement in the planning, was smiling.

“Great job, ladies!” Phillip told me and Hannah after it was over. He placed a hand on each of our shoulders. “This is going to be a tough choice. But we have a few months, and we want you two to keep working together and co-managing Brillig. For now, you are both acting Senior Account Directors.”

“I think this calls for a round of drinks,” Martin announced, pulling Hannah and me into an awkward embrace.

“I can’t,” I said, trying to think of an excuse.

“She’s got a call with the web team for another client,” Hannah volunteered with a subtle shrug. I’d sent her a frantic text when Josh had showed up at my room, and where he still was, waiting. A small part of me would have rather gone and had drinks with my co-workers than face him again.

“Oh, come on, party pooper!” Martin whined, “I’m sure the meeting can wait until we get back.”

“Unfortunately, it can’t.”

I could have kissed Hannah at that point. Not only was she lying through her teeth for me, but she had also taken in everything I’d told her and not passed on an ounce of judgment. Megan glanced at her and then at me; she had access to my schedule and knew there wasn’t anything scheduled with any web team.

“Okay, okay,” Martin said. “I guess I will just have to settle for the blonde and the redhead.
