Sometimes even our best efforts yield only weeds.

GREG TOLD HIMSELF he didn’t have time to worry about Lucy right now. He needed to concentrate on his meeting with the Facilities Manager for Allen Industries’ corporate headquarters. He’d worked for weeks on his presentation and he couldn’t afford to blow it because he was distracted by the most fascinating and frustrating woman he’d ever met.

This contract would make him a major player in the landscaping business. His father had gone after Allen Industries for years and had failed every time. With his typical stoicism, he’d shrugged off his disappointment with “Ah, well, we have enough business anyway.”

Enough for what? When Greg had taken over Polhemus Gardens, he’d immediately set his sights on winning the one thing that had always eluded his father. When he’d looked over his portfolio one last time before putting it in the mail, he’d been confident he had the contract nailed. He’d never done better work.

Now, sitting in a waiting room in the thirty-story steel-and-glass headquarters of Allen Industries, his confidence wavered. He was running with the big dogs here. Was he ready for this?

“Mr. Davidson will see you now.” A secretary in an icecream pink suit escorted him down a carpeted hallway to a large office. Smoked glass on two sides of the room afforded a view of Tranquility Park. An older man with a fleshy face and receding brown hair looked up from behind a massive walnut desk. “Good morning, Mr. Polhemus.”

“Mr. Davidson.” Greg shook the man’s hand. “Thank you for seeing me.”

“Please, sit down.” Davidson gestured to a leather desk chair.

Greg sat, crossed his legs, then uncrossed them. “Mr. Davidson, I—”

“I’ve taken a look at your portfolio.” The older man cut him off.

“Yes?” He waited, holding his breath.

“Very impressive. Especially for such a small concern.”

“Our small size allows us to give individual attention to each client.” He’d rehearsed the phrase so often it was a wonder he didn’t mumble it in his sleep.

Davidson nodded, his expression bland. “That is, of course, something we would expect.”

He leaned forward. “I’m confident we can provide the design sophistication you’re looking for, while maintaining a landscape that is both low-maintenance and environmentally friendly.”

A deep vee formed between Davidson’s brows. “You’re not one of those eco-fanatics, are you?”

“Uh, no. Of course not.” Was this some sort of test?

“We’ve had problems in that area before. Some extremists hear ‘plastics’ or ‘manufacturer’ and automatically assume we’re out to poison the planet.”

“The program I’ve outlined in my proposal would stand up well to criticism from environmentalists,” Greg said. “In addition, lessening the reliance on chemical fertilizers and pest control is more cost effective.”

Davidson sat back, hands folded on his stomach. “Tell me something about yourself, Mr. Polhemus. What are your hobbies and interests?”

He shifted in his chair. “Uh, I enjoy gardening, of course. Sports.” Not that he had time to play any. He searched for something else to add and found nothing. When had he become so dull?

“Any church or political affiliations?”

He shook his head.
