Changing the Post-it Notes

“Hi Steve.”

“Hey Liddy-Jean, what’s shakin’, bacon?”

I laughed like I always do when Steve says that. “I am not bacon,” I said.

“So waz up, my girlfriend?”

“I am not your girlfriend!” I said, laughing at him.

Steve laughed too. “A guy is allowed to dream, can’t he?”

“Dreams don’t usually come true.”

“I’m not sure about that, Liddy-Jean. I think you could make just about anything come true.”

He might be right. I thought about how I usually did get whatever I worked hard enough for, and how folding laundry and clearing the dinner table for a whole year got me my bike.

“It is working that gets you things,” I said, as I sat down in my favorite chair in his office. It was blue, exactly the color of Steve’s eyes, and I figured he knew this since he wore blue shirts a lot.

“Why do you have a mirror by your desk?”

He looked in the mirror and said in his best mobster voice, “Hey, you talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?” I always laugh when he does this.

“I have it there because my dad always told me if you can’t face the door, the next best thing is to have a mirror.”

“Was your dad afraid of someone sneaking up on him?”

“He was a policeman.”

I sat up extra straight in the blue chair. “A real one?” I asked.

“A real one.”

“Where does he keep his police car? At your house?”

“No, Liddy-Jean. He died a few years ago.”

“Oh,” I said, trying not to cry for Steve, and also for Kenzie who lost one mom and never had a dad. My belly started a new stomachache just for Steve.

“What happened to his car?” I asked, hoping he would not cry at work about his daddy dying.

“They took it back to the police station.”

“Was it raining?” I asked.

“Yes. Why did you ask that?”

“Because you are staring out the window, and it is raining,” I said. “This is my favorite chair, you know why?”

Steve leaned over his desk and widened his eyes, huge, like a handsome monster. “Because it matches my gorgeous baby blues?” he said, blinking his eyelashes real fast so I would laugh.

“Yes,” I said. Then I waited as long as I could before asking my question.

“Steve, if someone swears the first time you meet him and is doing drugs, can I get the police after him?” I asked.

Steve put his pen down and looked serious. “I’d have to know more before I could say for sure. Exactly who are we talking about?”
