âHi Steve.â
âHey Liddy-Jean, whatâs shakinâ, bacon?â
I laughed like I always do when Steve says that. âI am not bacon,â I said.
âSo waz up, my girlfriend?â
âI am not your girlfriend!â I said, laughing at him.
Steve laughed too. âA guy is allowed to dream, canât he?â
âDreams donât usually come true.â
âIâm not sure about that, Liddy-Jean. I think you could make just about anything come true.â
He might be right. I thought about how I usually did get whatever I worked hard enough for, and how folding laundry and clearing the dinner table for a whole year got me my bike.
âIt is working that gets you things,â I said, as I sat down in my favorite chair in his office. It was blue, exactly the color of Steveâs eyes, and I figured he knew this since he wore blue shirts a lot.
âWhy do you have a mirror by your desk?â
He looked in the mirror and said in his best mobster voice, âHey, you talkinâ to me? You talkinâ to me?â I always laugh when he does this.
âI have it there because my dad always told me if you canât face the door, the next best thing is to have a mirror.â
âWas your dad afraid of someone sneaking up on him?â
âHe was a policeman.â
I sat up extra straight in the blue chair. âA real one?â I asked.
âA real one.â
âWhere does he keep his police car? At your house?â
âNo, Liddy-Jean. He died a few years ago.â
âOh,â I said, trying not to cry for Steve, and also for Kenzie who lost one mom and never had a dad. My belly started a new stomachache just for Steve.
âWhat happened to his car?â I asked, hoping he would not cry at work about his daddy dying.
âThey took it back to the police station.â
âWas it raining?â I asked.
âYes. Why did you ask that?â
âBecause you are staring out the window, and it is raining,â I said. âThis is my favorite chair, you know why?â
Steve leaned over his desk and widened his eyes, huge, like a handsome monster. âBecause it matches my gorgeous baby blues?â he said, blinking his eyelashes real fast so I would laugh.
âYes,â I said. Then I waited as long as I could before asking my question.
âSteve, if someone swears the first time you meet him and is doing drugs, can I get the police after him?â I asked.
Steve put his pen down and looked serious. âIâd have to know more before I could say for sure. Exactly who are we talking about?â
