When Libby woke up, the room was in complete darkness. Connie was fast asleep. Libby checked the time on her clock: it was just after one oâclock. She heard a yowling noise outside. I bet itâs that stray cat again, she thought. Heâs probably trying to get back into school to find a warm spot to sleep in. Maybe his screeching had woken her up.
She shivered as she padded over to open the window to check. Looking outside, she started, as a light flashed on and off. Ducking back, she searched up and down until she spotted a figure hidden in the shadows by the lamp post.
âConnie,â she whispered.
Connie didnât stir.
She went over and roughly shook her. âWake up!â
Connie jumped up. âWhat?â She looked at her clock. âItâs the middle of the night!â
Libby put her finger to her lips. âNever mind, come here.â She beckoned her over and pointed to the figure below. âLook.â
Connie shrugged. âSo?â She rubbed her eyes. âIs that what you woke me up for?â
âSomeone is lurking outside the school! I saw them signal with a light, on and off.â
âIâm too tired to care,â Connie yawned. âGo back to bed, Libby.â
They both heard a noise and looked down. The schoolâs front door opened beneath them. Someone crossed the street to the shadowy figure. The light from the lamp post illuminated their face just long enough for Libby and Connie to see who it was.
âMiss Browne!â said Libby. âWhy is she sneaking out of the school in the middle of the night?â
âThat is strange,â Connie agreed.
Watching carefully, Libby could see the figure hand over a parcel to Miss Browne. She opened it up and took out what looked like a small box but Libby was too far away to see what was inside. The other person â Libby could see now it was a man â headed off into the darkness.
