I’m tired and stiff when I wake. Jace is on watch, and he has good news, delivered in an undertone since everyone else is still asleep and all those hungry carni’saurs are still out there. The com-unit got a satellite lock in the night and he put through a call to Highway Patrol on the McEvoys’ behalf.

Highway Patrol arrives in a large off-road tow vehicle just as we’re finishing breakfast. After assessing the family’s medical condition—conclusion, not too dire—they decide to go via the car and make at least a quick attempt to recover it immediately. That’s great news for us, since it means we can go with them and avoid that five-mile walk unSPARKed. Thanks, God. Thanks, Saint Ig and Saint Max.

I try to learn their real names from Liam as we drive. It’s been fun having him around. Like having a younger brother. But before long we’re back at the ’Vi. We provide cover while Highway Patrol get a long cable down to the battered car and haul it back up to the road, securing it to the back of the patrol vehicle—and then it’s time to part company.

“Bye, Liam,” I say. “I hope you get to your Uncle Greg’s for New Year’s Day.”

“I think we will,” grins Liam. “Maybe I’ll ride a dracorex.”

“A thoroughbred race’saur?” I snort. “Rather you than me. Unless you’re some sort of crack rider?”

“Nah. Maybe I’ll ride an old retired one.”

“That’s a better idea. Well, bye.”

Marty and Roddy are still up in the turret, covering everyone as they move from vehicle to vehicle.

Jace claps Liam on the shoulder. “Well, I hope God carries on watching over you the way he did this last twenty-four hours. And if you ever need a job…” He winks.

Liam grins again, his cheeks going pink. “Thanks, you guys. Well, bye.” His parents are already in the Highway Patrol vehicle, sitting nice and still and taking it easy the way the patrollers told them to.

“Bye, Liam.” I roll up into the ’Vi and stand, then my hand darts out to stop Jace closing the door. “Hey, Liam!” I call.

About to climb into the patrol vehicle, he looks around.

“Live long and prosper!”

An even bigger smile splits his face. “Peace and long life!” he yells back, which some corner of my brain tells me is the correct response. “And…” he adds, “good hunting!”

Yep. We’ve still got a pack of Utahraptors to find.

“Good hunting, Liam!”
