Chapter 10

Neve walked up Mum’s driveway with Jessica beside her. ‘I sense leadership qualities in you.’ Jessica’s statement ran in circles around her head all night. Neve had wanted to say something cheeky, like ‘that’s just because I lead you in bed.’ But the words had stuck in her throat and she’d run away, home to her little flat, then back to her garage early in the morning after a restless sleep. Jessica had dropped by the garage near to take measurements and do other business related tasks. It had been a fruitful afternoon’s work. Queenie had dropped by the garage as well and had nutted out all the details with Jessica while Neve had welded an exhaust back together. Jessica managed the business side of work without interfering in Neve’s job, and she really appreciated being able to focus without having to talk to clients or stop work to answer the phone. Maybe this arrangement could work.

‘Neve.’ Mum leaned out the back door with her fabulous big grin. She always gave the impression that Neve was her favourite person in the world—a gift she gave to all her foster kids—and yet it always filled Neve with a special warmth. After years of not belonging, and being shuttled between temporary homes, Mum’s gift of a loving family that she could rely on to help if she wanted, was worth everything. If only she could let herself trust that it would be forever, just like Mum promised. That was the problem with the foster lifestyle, its transient nature didn’t allow her to completely settle into a home. Her own flat, the one she’d lived in for five years now as an adult, relying only on herself, was sparsely decorated. Easy to pack up into boxes and shift to another location when needed. Transportable. Transient. She’d probably never be able to settle down into a forever home—the idea seemed as unlikely as ending up on the moon.

‘Hey. I brought a friend.’ Neve let Mum hug her, then stepped back.

‘A special friend?’

Neve waggled her head side to side to cover the rush of heat to her cheeks. ‘A business partner.’

‘Is that what young kids are calling it these days?’ Mum laughed, a rich sound of true happiness. Neve grinned, she couldn’t get one past Mum no matter how hard she tried. Years of foster kids had shown Mum everything. Nothing surprised her, or bothered her, provided someone’s choices didn’t hurt someone else, and then Mum would let her temper fly. To be kind, before anything else, was Mum’s life philosophy, and she instilled it in everyone. That was probably why Neve had agreed to this whole business thing with Jessica, even while it seemed surreal. The idea of angel investing was something Mum would do. Mum invested in people’s hearts, not their wallets, which in many ways was more important.

‘This is Jessica Beaufort. She’s just bought a share in my garage. Jessica, this is Mrs Farrellton.’

‘Call me Mum. Everyone else does.’ Mum extended
