Chapter 9

Neve knew she shouldn’t have pushed Jessica to reveal herself, but the difference between them seemed to engulf her as she stood in Jessica’s plush bedroom. The bloody room was large enough to be a living room in a normal sized house, and then to see the ensuite bathroom that “she didn’t even use” only highlighted how far apart they were in life. They might be joint owners of the same business—a business that had no customers yet, or cars to sell—but that didn’t take away any of the knowledge that Neve was the one who didn’t have a back-up plan here. If the business fell over, Neve would end up with nothing, while Jessica would still have all of this. What the fuck had she been thinking?

She could still taste Jessica’s musk on her tongue—she’d been inside her, made her moan, made her orgasm, and it was probably a giant mistake. Pleasure was never a mistake, but pleasure with so much at stake... Hmmm, not the best idea. She grabbed the first outfit she could see in Jessica’s ridiculously overstocked wardrobe, squinting so she couldn’t stare at the racks of shoes and rows of glamourous dresses. Was that a whole shelf of hats? No, she wasn’t going to look because she didn’t want to know. She slipped on a t-shirt and a pair of sloppy pyjama pants from a pile all neatly folded on a shelf at this end of the huge room. Faint notes of Jessica’s perfume wafted up from her clothes. Why did one person need so many clothes? Neve tended to wear her jeans until they fell apart, held together by grease stains and the grime of her job. She sighed. Whatever. Good for Jessica—from what she’d said, she’d built this life all herself. As much as someone can when they are given every advantage; good schooling, rich parents, and probably a trust fund, or at least money from her parents, to tide her over while she started her first business. All the things Neve hadn’t gotten from her life. She rolled her neck on her shoulders—for all her lack of advantage, she’d built a decent life for herself. With her own hands as she’d slowly built her garage from part time to full time. And off her own back, so to speak, to supplement her business while starting out, thanks to a pretty face gifted to her by her biological parents. At least they’d been good for something.

“I thought you were hungry?” Jessica’s voice rang out behind her and she whipped around. Jessica had thrown on yet another pair of her satin pyjamas, these ones in lemon and the pale yellow colour emphasised Jessica’s light skin. Did she ever get sun on her face? She looked like she never ventured outside, always sitting in the glow of a computer screen.

“Yeah, starving.”

“What do you feel like? I’ll order something, and there is a bottle of Moet in the fridge. We are celebrating, after all.”

“We are?”

“Yes. To business success.
