Five days later Clarke trudges into her apartment. Who knew riding the Greyhound bus would be so tiring? It’s only eight o’clock at night, but Clarke hit the ground running once she reached Albany and never stopped. She wearily places her duffel bag on the floor and opens her refrigerator, hoping food will miraculously appear so she need not order takeout. Tonight would have been a great night to stay with Fran. She always has her kitchen stocked with food, which is confusing since she eats out most of the time, but since they began spending time together, Fran has cooked for her several times, and she keeps some of Clarke’s favorite snacks on hand.

Clarke had a tough time not seeing Fran’s face, hearing her voice, feeling her touch. It’s not as if Clarke could even call her. It’s not something she does. Nor does she text Fran. At most, she might send an email about something that might have occurred on a project. She’s depended on Fran to reach out to schedule each meeting. She wonders whether it’s time for her to pick up the slack a bit. It’s clear Fran is taking the time to see her. She might appreciate Clarke doing the same. It’s something to think about.

The truth is that it takes discipline not to contact Fran. It’s niggled at her, this yearning to reach out when she has a spare minute. During the week Clarke was so busy taking a series of animation classes that she was able to shelve her thoughts of Fran until she sank, exhausted, into her bed late each night. She has nothing to distract her now.

Sighing, Clarke resigns herself to ordering out and eating alone. Instead of shoving her thoughts of Fran away, though, she pulls them to the forefront. She has time tonight to devote to how she feels about the woman. To Clarke, Fran is truly larger than life. She never does anything halfway. When she decides on a course of action, she commits herself one hundred percent. Clarke has seen this happen countless times in the professional realm and to a limited extent in their relationship.

Clarke has a theory. She believes Fran is making small decisions regarding Clarke. They are adding up, building to the greatest, most treasured wish Clarke holds close to her heart. She wants Fran to commit to her completely. So far Fran has committed to spending time with Clarke, to making love to her wholeheartedly, and to demonstrating her affection when in the privacy of her home. Clarke loves every minute they share together.

Just as Clarke picks up the phone to place a food order, she hears a knock on the door. Phone in hand, Clarke looks through the peep hole to see a vision. Fran. Opening the door, Clarke doesn’t try to hold back her happiness as she steps aside to let Fran pass. Hearing Fran drop her belongings on the counter, Clarke turns from locking the door to see arms reaching for her.
