So Clueless

“What are you doing here?” Cash asked Addison when she walked in the front door. She rang the bell as always and he let her in.

“I wanted to talk to you again.”

He let out a sigh. “No work for you?”

“I’m off today,” she said. “If I called you might have ignored me. I wasn’t worried you’d be out on a date. Or that you’d have a woman here.”

He lifted an eyebrow at that and decided not to comment. It’d been three days since Hannah was here. There was no communication between them on Monday, but Tuesday night he’d sent her a text. He’d spent all day formulating it in his mind and in the end said, “Hi.”

It had been dinnertime and he was home, but she didn’t reply until an hour later. He was guessing she was working and all she said was the same back with a smiley face.

It put it back on him to say something else and he didn’t. Not because he didn’t want to but because small talk wasn’t his thing.

His plan was to try again tonight, but now his sister was here and that was out of the question for the moment.

“What is it you wanted to talk to me about again?”

“Your hair looks good. Fancier than you normally get it cut.”

He felt his shoulders drop. Hannah had done a better job than he normally got. He liked it and should have told her that. But there were too many eyes on him in the shop and he couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

“It’s not like I asked for it,” he said. “I went in and sat down.”

That was the truth at least.

“I suppose. Anyway, I’m here because of Mom again.”

“What now?” he asked.

“Have you talked to her lately?”

“I saw her today. Nothing seemed different.”

He didn’t always go talk to her when he was working. He started his day before his mother came in, then oftentimes returned after her. Or at least went into the building after she’d left.

Today he’d stopped in before she left to get some information from her. She’d been talking to Steve and seemed fine to him.

“Was she happy again?” Addison asked.

“I don’t know. She was talking to Steve about the greenhouses. They stopped and looked at me. Mom wanted to know what I needed, I told her and she sent it to my email, then I left.”

“Oh,” Addison said.

“Why?” he asked.

“She’s been in a good mood again. Sneaking around talking on the phone quietly like before. I think she went out last night.”

He let out a sigh. “Because you were watching to see when she got home?”

“Maybe,” Addison said. “Did she look any different than normal? I don’t think she came home from work. I think she went from there, but I doubt she’d go out wearing one of the Fielding Landscaping shirts.”

“I don’t pay attention to that,” he said. “And the last time I asked her why she had a different shirt on she got mad at me.
