I washed my face about three times. That always helps me to calm down. The third time, I held the towel I was using to dry off with and looked at myself in the mirror. I thought about Aunt Harriet and Uncle Walter living in some big pre-war apartment on Riverside Drive. As I did, I got a couple of flashes.
One was of a really big, circumcised dick. It was really pretty. Almost as big and almost as pretty as Whit's but not quite.
The other image I got was more involved. I saw a chic woman wearing a floral-print dressing gown. She was sitting on a stool and putting on makeup at a dressing table while a boy of about 5 or 6 was watching her. He looked happy and she was smiling at him in the mirror. I stepped back when I realized that was Julian when he was a kid. Then I felt a cascade of sadness and regret. Well, that isn't exactly right. Someone near me was feeling sadness and regret.
That was one of the reasons I didn't like the mediumship thing. I didn't like other people's emotions being that close to me.
I folded the towel and put it next to the sink. When I opened the door, I found Whit waiting for me. He was hunched over and leaning against the wall.
"You OK?" he asked.
I nodded. "Yeah."
"They left."
"Good." I looked up and realized he was hunched over because he couldn't stand up straight. "We should go outside."
He grinned a little. "I kinda like hobbit boats, like this one."
I laughed. "I didn't see a decapitator on the ceiling, so you should be good."
He leaned in and kissed me on the lips. "I love you, Eddie."
"I love you, too."
"They want us to stay for a while. You up for that?"
I nodded. "As long as Julian and Victor are gone."
"They are."
