He concludes Book 4 with a lovely prayer:

O Domine Deus noster, in velamento alarum tuarum speremus, et protege nos et porta nos.

Oh Lord our God, let us hope in the covering of your wings; protect us and carry us.

Tu portabis et parvulos et usque ad canos tu portabis,

You will carry us when we are small, as far as old age you will carry us,

quoniam firmitas nostra quando tu es, tunc est firmitas,

because when you are our firmness, then there is real firmness,

cum autem nostra est, infirmitas est.

when our firmness is our own, it is weakness.

Vivit apud te semper bonum nostrum,

Our good always lives in your presence

et quia inde aversi sumus, perversi sumus.

and because we turn from it, we are perverted.

Revertamur iam, Domine, ut non evertamur,

Let us return [to you], Lord, in such a way that we are not overturned

quia vivit apud te sine ullo defectu bonum nostrum,

because our good lives with you without defect,

quod tu ipse es,

because you are that good

et non timemus ne non sit quo redeamus, quia nos inde ruimus.

and we are not afraid that there may be no way for us to return10, because we have fallen into ruin.

Nobis autem absentibus non ruit domus nostra, aeternitas tua.

Even while we were away from you our house did not fall into ruin, for our house is your eternity.11
