“I am the first Riddle-Spoken, the Feathered Beasssssst,” the serpent hissed. She had a high, silky voice, and her body made metallic tinkling sounds as she moved her head left and right to peer at them. “To pass beyond my room, you must first passssss my test.”

“What about Logan?” Cooper called. “Where is he?”

“Thissss one?” the snake asked. Her body tightened around them, her metal feathers making the sound of wind chimes. Slowly, the end of her tail came into view, and Logan dangled from her grasp, his mouth covered with feathers. “He is a recklessssss, thoughtlesssss boy. My perfect prey. But you will receive him back, should you succeed.”

“And if we don’t?” Mateo asked.

Her tongue flickered out her mouth. “You will see. Are you prepared to be judged, adventurerssssss?”

Mateo swallowed. If there was anything he hated, it was exactly that—going into a test he wasn’t prepared for. Putting his creativity to a test, being judged. Failing. But Logan and Izzie were both on the line now. So he straightened up proudly, summoning all his courage, and nodded.

Zoey folded her arms resolutely. “What’s the riddle, Feathered Beast?”

The serpent’s smile widened. It had clearly been years since anyone challenged her, and she was excited to make it worth the wait.

“I deceive you by promising my path is faster, but I make sure you can never finish your journey,” she said. “I let you run as fast as you can, but give me my way, and you may never get any closer to your goal. What am I?” The snake’s eyes flashed. “You have ten secondssss to answer.”

Ten seconds? That wasn’t long enough! Mateo’s heart beat in his ears as he searched his brain. What let you run without getting closer to anything? What could promise you a fast path and never let you finish a journey? His mind roamed, frantic. But it reminded him of something, didn’t it? Something Izzie had said earlier. She’d used a specific word. It was on the tip of his tongue—

“Time’ssss up!” the Feathered Beast cried.

“No, wait!” Cooper said.

Zoey pulled out her bow. “You’ll have to go through us first!”

The giant serpent looked ready to do just that. She struck forward, her mouth wide, fangs out. Mateo’s mind whirled, searching for the word, as she sprang to swallow him whole.

“Impatience!” Mateo burst, and threw up his pencil-spear. “Impatience is the answer!”

The snake’s mouth paused, her fangs still craning over his head. Slowly, she drew her head back. A new twinkle entered her eye, and she waved Logan in the air until the smoke cleared, and they could finally see the bright open window and the wide, circular room they stood in. Just behind the serpent, a new door appeared, bright blue and waiting for them.

“That issss correct!” the Feathered Beast hissed. “It is impatience that promises a quick creative journey and robs it out from under you. Congratulationssss, adventurerssss.” She dropped Logan free of her grasp. “You may continue on, victorioussss.”

“We did it!” Mateo cried. Z-Blob jumped up and down on his shoulder, feeling victorious, indeed.
