DURING LAURAâS working-week, Philip served her with his passion renewed. The brutality of his beating, rather than waking hatred or resentment, only seemed to deepen his love for Laura. Every afternoon around four o-clock he changed into his maidâs uniform with both his hands and heart trembling in anticipation of welcoming his Mistress home from work. And, for all his excitement, he found that he really did have a âquiet heart.â Religion had never played a significant part in his life, but his subjugation to Laura brought him the peace he imagined a monk might find living in a monastery. It was as if he truly had given himself to Laura body and soul, and found his place in life as her devoted servant.
Not that Laura was always kind to her adoring slave for she found great pleasure in teasing and tormenting Philip, often collaring him and tying him to the bannister, or to the end of her bed, or to the clothes-line in the garden while she read a book, or worked on her computer of had a snooze. Sheâd have him help her dress in the morning and undress at bed-times, and sheâd often flaunt herself in front of him, but she no longer let him make love to her. That joy truly was reserved for another man, but she delighted in her power over Philip, sometimes using him as her toilet just for the thrill it gave her to use him so basely. And for Philipâs part, he now hungered for her cruelty and the taste of her golden wine. If it was possible to use such a word of his strange, debased life, he began to think of himself as happy.
Only the still distant threat of John Garra cast a cloud over Philipâs life. Much to Lauraâs frustration the doctors would not let John out of hospital, nor give her a date for his release. She had to content herself with long phone-calls every evening. Sheâd usually hide away in her study talking to John for hours at a time, but sheâd often take time to walk past her bound slave, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she sweet-talked her lover in her husbandâs hearing. She knew how much this humiliated Philip, and she shared the pleasure he found in his degradation. She came to think of her cruelty to Philip as both sacred and profane, a combination that gave her arousal a kind of spiritual force.
âOh, yes, Pippaâs being very obedient,â she once said to John in front of her helpless, red-faced husband. âI gave him a very severe punishment a few days ago and ever since heâs been as good as gold. He rather worships me these days, Iâm embarrassed to say. Iâll have to be careful or it will go to my head.â
Laura had hoped John might get home at the week-end but her Friday phone-call with John dashed her hopes. The doctors would still not release him from hospital, but John assured her he was feeling stronger with every passing day, and would be with her before long.
