Usually an RNN has a short-term memory, but in conjunction with LSTM, it can have long-term memory as well. A recurrent neural network is able to remember exactly that because of its internal memory. It produces output, copies that output, and loops it back into the network. RNNs thus can add the immediate past to the present.

Input weights are added to both present and past inputs for RNNs. RNNs can map one to many, many to many (translation), and many to one (classifying a voice), as shown in Figure 3-11.
