Our project has a string resource file in app/res/values/strings.xml. It provides textual resource values for the app. Android wants us to store all the string literals in this resource file instead of hard-coding them as you’ve seen in Listing 11-4.

The “Resource name” becomes the “name” attribute of the newly created string resource, and the “Resource value” becomes, well, the value of the string resource. This value is what will show up in the Button’s text. Click “OK” to complete the action.

Listing 11-5 shows the content of activity_main.xml after the fix. The value of android:text is now set to “@string/button.” The @ sign means we should not use the value of this string directly but instead look up a resource named “button” in the strings resource file.<Button

android:id="@+id/button"

android:text="@string/button"

/>
