CASE STUDY Part 1

Stephen and the new leader position

Stephen took over a department that had lost its way. To its customers, it appeared as a rather typical headquarters function, somewhat arrogant, unhearing and distant from them. The director he replaced had run the top structure without much direction. To outsiders, it seemed like a club of equals – they seemed a closely-knit group, who lunched together every day. The Director acted as their protector and paradoxically also as their servant.

Stephen was given a mission to shake things up, and to open the function up so to serve the organization’s needs. How he related to his top team would determine his ability to make progress with this mission, but he knew this would be challenging. How was he to do this if he was largely seen as “bad news”? How could he ever rival the closeness of his predecessor? How could he get enough closeness but also keep his freedom of manoeuvre?
