Besides hiring capable teachers and seeing that they are properly placed, principals of low-performing schools should take steps to ensure that effective teachers remain on the faculty. Reducing teacher turnover is an important key to sustaining school improvement. Strategies to increase retention will be addressed later in the book.
Many first-order strategies have been presented in this chapter. Principals of low-performing schools may be tempted to try and implement lots of them in their first 90-day plan. To do so would be a mistake. Focus remains the guiding principle. Choosing a few strategies to implement increases the chances of success. As is so often the case, success is likely to breed success, or at least it is more likely to breed success than failure to implement strategies because too many strategies were undertaken at one time.
