CHAPTER 6

When Ivy came to, the sun shone into her bedroom. She was lying in her bed in Theo’s arms, her head resting on his chest, clad in one of her oversized sleep shirts she had folded on her bed yesterday. Theo was awake, holding a framed photo. He wore sweatpants and a t-shirt, no longer in the tattered clothes from yesterday.

Her hand instinctively went to her neck, which was now fully healed and clean of any blood and any poison. She looked up at Theo in a panic.

“What is it?” he asked, quickly placing the framed photo on the nightstand to free his hand. “Where does it hurt?” He glided his hand down her neck, her arm.

Pain was definitely not what she was feeling. As much as she wanted him to keep touching her, she couldn’t keep the panic at bay. She had Delphine, but would that be enough without a sample of the poison?

She put her hand to her neck again. “What did you clean this with?”

“Just some gauze. I was going to bandage it up, but I saw it was healing fairly quickly.” Theo cupped her cheek with one of his hands. “My mother stopped by. Don’t worry. She took the gauze. Delphine and the others are in custody.”

Ivy closed her eyes and sighed in relief. She felt Theo’s warm lips against her forehead.

“She’s the one who dressed you, by the way,” he said.

How very gentlemanly of him, she thought.

Then she suddenly bolted upright, making herself slightly dizzy in the process.

“Whoa, easy there!” he chided gently. “I don’t think you’re at a hundred percent just yet.”

She laid back down. “It’s Monday!”

He laughed, a low throaty sound she was becoming accustomed to. “That’s usually what comes after Sunday.”

“You have a trial tomorrow.”

He rolled them over and hovered above her, touching her face. God, she could get used to that. “I know,” he said. “I thought I’d prepare from here if you don’t mind. I don’t want to leave you alone.”

“I don’t mind at all.” Actually, she preferred it, especially given how weak she still felt. She’d never be able to make it into work today. “I’ll help you.”

He smiled warmly, planted a sweet kiss on her lips, then insisted on making her something to eat, despite her protests of not being hungry… not for food, anyway. She finally acquiesced to tea and toast. Breakfast in bed.

She managed a quick shower while he prepared breakfast. He seemed pleased when she ate some of his eggs. Maybe she was hungrier than she thought… for food.

When they were finished eating, he picked up the frame from the nightstand, a photo of her on her thirteenth birthday. She was smiling, sitting between her mom and grandmother on a picnic blanket next to her ancestral Silky Willow. The twinkling lights would be hung later when it was evening. It was still daylight in the photo. Her red curls shone brightly in the sunlight.

Theo ran his fingers through her currently tamed, platinum blonde locks. “Why did you color it?”

She shrugged.
