“Kenna, may I have a word with you?”
Kenna turned to see Winnie standing in the doorway to the garden. “Sure. What’s up?” Something must be terribly wrong. Were Marietta’s daughters-in-law going to fire her, after all? What terrible thing had she done?
“I was hoping you might enjoy sitting out on the patio. It looks like we’ve got one last reprieve before it gets too cold.”
“Yes. Your mother-in-law is asleep. She will likely nap for another half hour or so. I’m sure she’ll hope to see you when she wakens.”
Winnie smiled. “I’m glad you’re taking such good care of her, Kenna. I know you’re just doing your job, and that we’re paying you, but it takes such a load off the family to see how well she’s being taken care of. I hope you realize how much we value you.”
Maybe she wasn’t getting fired after all. “Would you like me to put on a pot of tea?” she asked.
“That would be nice. I brought a few cranberry oatmeal cookies for us to share.” Winnie settled at the kitchen table while Kenna fixed two cups of tea. If she didn’t steep it correctly, Winnie didn’t correct her. At least she wasn’t expected to make coffee anyone else would want to drink. But her curiosity was killing her.
Winnie chatted about her teenage sons until they were outside. Kenna settled into one of the chairs on the patio. A month ago she would have always chosen to sit in the shade, but now that it was late September, the air was much cooler, and the sunshine was welcome. She nibbled at a cookie and took a sip of tea. “Please tell me what’s on your mind.”
Winnie chuckled. “I wasn’t trying to make you worry. I saw that you were in church on Sunday, and I wondered if that might be the first time you’ve ever been. What did you think of it?”
Kenna toyed with the hem of her knit dress. How did Winnie know how much she’d been thinking about the pastor’s words from last week? Had Marietta told her about their conversation? Kenna wouldn’t put it past the old lady. But what did it hurt? Church had definitely been a strange experience.
She studied Winnie for a long moment. The other woman took a sip of her tea and didn’t seem about to pressure Kenna in any way. “I haven’t stepped foot in a church very often. A few weddings and funerals over the years, and that’s about it. The singing was nice. And everyone sure seemed to care about your mother-in-law, even though I think a lot of them were at her birthday party the day before.”
Winnie nodded. “Marietta is well loved by the community. Everyone is so glad to see her recovering well, and we have you to thank for it.”
“I’m just doing my job,” Kenna protested.
“And you’re doing it well. What did you think of Pastor Tomas’s sermon?”
So the casual conversation had ended, and Winnie was going to keep driving for the heart.
