CHAPTER 6
The audience shuffled out of the arena, dispersing through the exit points, Lukas stood up, extending his hand to Amelia. The laughter of those delighted by the journey and the duel's outcome became a distant echo, mingling with groans of disappointment from those affected by both the result and the journey. Hayden had also departed, bidding them farewell and hurrying down to the central oval deck with a concerned glance.
"Does he play with all of you like puppets?" Amelia grumbled in annoyance, referring to The Dean.
"He's not that bad." Lukas defended their autonomy reluctantly, but Amelia remained unconvinced. This place felt like a prison.
A headache began to throb on her temple.
Everything she had experienced since The Dean locked her in the laboratory and forced her to listen had now fully sunk in. The strange atmosphere, her teleporting powers, attempts to return to Earth with little success, the insanity of the powers wielded by the people of Harth.
Amelia felt like her head was about to burst out of her body. Her body could endure more than her brain could handle. Doors closed in on her, and suddenly she was heaving and gasping for air.
âAmelia." Cian tapped her face frantically, but it was of no use. Doors surrounded her, closing in. She felt like she would be crushed between them. Cian stared into her eyes and tightly hugged her.
When Amelia opened her eyes, she was between moving doors closing in on them. Cian broke out of her embrace, slashing a quick, small burst of thunder on the doors, shattering them into specks of dust. Before he could breathe a sigh of relief, they were teleported to another place with doors closing in on them.
Cian focused on Amelia. âThis won't stop unless you get a hold of yourself, Amelia." he said softly, holding her head between his palms. âFocus on me. Focus.â
She dug her plain nails into Lukas's arms, a sharp exhale escaping her lips. Closing her eyes, she focused on the scent of Lukas in the cramped space, the lingering touch of his rough, calloused palms, the safety she felt ever since he saved her in the backyard. Amelia's breathing steadied, and in the midst of golden glimmers with sparkling burgundy hues, they found themselves back in the winged chariot.
âAre you okay?â Lukas asked, his palm inches away from her cheek. Amelia gave him a clumsy nod, her eyes fluttering open from where they were closed, and Lukas let his hand fall. The chariot ascended, moving across the arena to the pinion.
Buildings painted with the sky unfurled before them, creating an illusion of nothing but the sky, yet the badge granted her the ability to see beyond. Amelia and Lukas entered the single-story structure, stretching far beyond her line of sight.
Staff, dressed similarly to Miss Kalp, nodded at Lukas in greeting, though he actively ignored them. Amelia, on the other hand, smiled in surprise when approached, but they retreated at Lukas's stern glare.
Amelia didn't mind the attention, grateful for the positive reception, but she remained unnerved by recent events.
