CHAPTER 50

Nightingale waited until he was outside the hotel and certain that he wasn’t being followed before he called Lynsey Lawton.

“Any news?” she said.

“Some,” he said. “Seems like we’ve got another fish that was hooked.”

“Does he have a name?”

“I’d rather keep that to myself.”

“Are you any further forward?”

“A little. The weak area in this whole thing is trying to persuade the client to pay up. If these people have a secret way of causing natural-looking deaths, it’s kind of hard to claim responsibility for it. It’s probably not great for business to keep killing the client, or the client’s family, so a few pointed threats might work. You ever hear of a guy called Scarletti?”

“Not that I recall. Is he dead?”

“Could well be. See what you can find. And maybe check on Delia Winston too, she was on the dead list this guy was given. I only spoke to her yesterday, she was pretty alive then.”

“I’ll get back to you.”

She ended the call and he put his phone away. Two men appeared, one either side. The one on his right grabbed his arm, just below the elbow. “Don’t do anything stupid,” the man growled. He was tall, well over six feet, with dyed blond hair and a square jaw that looked like it could take punches until the cows came home.

“What, like licking an electric socket?” said Nightingale. “Or shaving my pubic hair with a chain saw?”

“What?” said the man.

“You’ll need to define stupid, that’s all I’m saying.”

“Shut the fuck up,” said the second man. “And get in the car.”

“What car?”

A blue Ford Escape pulled up at the kerb. “That car,” said the second heavy. “Mr Marino wants a word with you.” If anything he was even bigger than the blond heavy, with a Desperate Dan five o’clock shadow.

“Now you see, that there is a paradox,” said Nightingale.

“Para-what?” said Desperate Dan.

“Paradox,” said Nightingale. “You said not to do anything stupid. Then you tell me to get into a car with two goons I’ve never set eyes on before. That’s a paradox.”

“Can’t we just shoot him?” said Blondie, his grip tightening on Nightingale’s arm.

“Boss wants to talk to him,” said Desperate Dan.

“Lucky me,” said Nightingale. “Or is it Lucky him?”

“In the car,” said Desperate Dan. He and Blondie pushed Nightingale towards the SUV. Desperate Dan opened the door and shoved Nightingale in. There was a man already sitting in the back. He was in his seventies, wearing a sharp suit and a wide blue silk tie with a gold pin in the middle.

Desperate Dan squeezed in next to Nightingale and slammed the door, while Blondie climbed in next to the driver.

“Mr Marino, I presume,” said Nightingale.

“You’ll excuse the somewhat anonymous vehicle,” said Marino, “I generally travel in a Lincoln or a Hummer, but I didn’t want to attract attention today.”

“I don’t think I’m being followed,” said Nightingale.

“I don’t care what you think. Why were you talking to Litvinsky?”

“How do you know I spoke to anyone?”

“Nothing happens in this town without my knowing, Nightingale.
