Chapter Eleven
The cafe was crowded seemingly to capacity, but it turned out membership really did have its privileges. Ellery and âCall Me Joâ hadnât long to wait before they were led to a small booth in the sunny greenhouse style dining room.
As soon as they were done with the business of ordering their coffee and food, Jocasta said earnestly, âIâm sorry about Neil. Heâs under so much pressure. Weâre all just really stressed. We were hoping to get a lot more media coverage, but so far thereâs been nothing. Zilch.â
Hearing that zilch wouldnât exactly make Sue Lewisâs day.
Ellery said, âSaturdayâs the big night, right? So maybe tonightââ
âIâve been trying to get hold of every contact I have at every music mag still in existence. Lara was on the cover of Rolling Stone twice, but theyâre not even returning my phone calls. Itâs not fair.â
First rule of show business: Life was not fair.
âIâm sorry.â
âYouâd think between Stephen Foster and Lara Fairplay, someone would be interested!â
Gosh, it sounded like Stephen Fosterâs reps werenât pulling their weight! But, of course, Ellery kept that thought to himself. âYouâd think,â he said neutrally.
âAnd then all the threats. And now all these accidents! Shouldnât that be a story in itself?â
Ellery studied Jocastaâs face. Did she understand what sheâd just said? âI thought you were keeping a lid on that? That you and the festival organizers didnât want word getting out about threats against Lara.â
Jocasta looked like she didnât understand. âIf something happens, itâs not like we can hide it.â
The waitress arrived with their breakfasts. Elleryâs brows shot up. He had a healthy appetite, but Jocasta had ordered enough food to feed half their road crew. Maybe sheâ
Nope. Jocasta picked up her fork and dived right into that stack of blueberry pancakes.
As the much-impressed waitress moved away, Ellery said, âWell, right. About last nightâs accidentââ
Jocasta lowered her fork. âNo, itâs okay. We heard about Mr. Carterâs girlfriend. And that you were there when it happened.â
âWell, not exactââ
âNobodyâs blaming you for last night. It could even have been an accident.â
Yeah, nobody thought it was an accident. That could even have been was a dead giveaway.
âMaybe.â Ellery sincerely doubted it. He knew for a fact the trapdoor had been nailed shut after the previous yearâs close call. Still, the theater and stage were long due for an overhaul. Maybe it was possible something had broken loose. âWhat exactly happened?â
âLara was right in the middle of âFool Me, Fool You,â and the trap door justâ¦opened. It fell open. She moves around a lot on stage so, luckily, she wasnât standing squarely on it. She almost lost her balance, but caught herself and stepped back. âJocasta added proudly, âShe didnât even miss a beat.â
âThe show didnât stop?â
âNope. Mr. Carter and the stage crew ran down there and shored it up again. I donât think most of the audience even knew what happened.â She swallowed. âWhat nearly happened.â
Heâd have to talk to Dylan and get his take, but two close calls, two maybe-accidents in twenty-four hours seemed like a lot.
