I woke before dawn and my mom groaned awake when I extricated myself from her limbs. Sticky with sweat, I turned on the shower and was joined by her a minute later.

“Hmm, you don’t regret last night, do you?”

“Not one second of it,” I replied, pulling her into the hot water and kissing her soundly.

I took her bent over the sink, and again on the bed before we dressed to meet the shuttle. It was a rosy-cheeked woman who stumbled out of our room and ducked her head in embarrassment when the girls emerged a moment later.

“Did you get any sleep?” Meegan asked with a yawn, her eyes sparkling with mirth. “Someone was trying to break their bed last night. It drove these two wild,” she winked at Maddy who snickered and Cassie who glanced at my mom and blushed, dark bangs falling in front of her face.

“Let’s get out of here,” I said, pointing to the headlights turning into the motel’s parking lot.

The shuttle turned out to be an old school bus with bench seats and no heater. In the frigid mountain morning, and with our limited clothing we huddled together on the back seats for warmth, while the driver worked his way past burned out wrecks and fallen trees.

The extent of destruction was clear as we headed down the mountains. In every direction were blackened woods, the hills denuded of brush and leaves. A part of me was grateful to the government. I couldn’t imagine spending weekends and summers in this hellscape, even with the new memories I carried.

My mom noted my emotion and gripped my hand in both of hers. The relaxed manner she’d shown with me in the motel room was gone, and she sat with stiff posture, face composed. The iciness was thawed, and the softness only enhanced her features.

She wasn’t the only one who noted my emotion. Meegan was sitting across from us, with her friends on either side and tilted her head when her mother took up my hand.

“We’ll replace what the government is stealing. Mom will find us a plot of land, on a lake, and you’ll build us another cabin. Just like your grandfather did.” Maddy cocked an eyebrow at her friend and looked at me, but Meegan only smiled. “As for what happens when we return to the real world… You leave that to me, big brother.”

“What are you talking about?” I frowned. “School starts in a month. I’ll be in a dorm most of the time head in the books.”

“You’ll be studying,” Meegan nodded once. “But it won’t be in a dorm.”

The minx wouldn’t explain herself but from Cassie and Maddy’s grins and laughter they knew what she was talking about. I pushed it aside and worried about how we were getting home, but my fears proved to be for naught. A rental car was waiting for us in a lot at the base of the mountain and with a wave the shuttle driver headed back up with a fresh load of supplies for the firefighters.
