The four of them hustle down Main Street. Mitch glances over his shoulder at the diner, trying to peek at whateverâs going on over there, but in five minutes it doesnât matterâthe shoppes swallow the view.
They follow Josh down the street, putting distance between them and Eddy, and Mitch canât stare at the enormous clock tower for very long without having dread and despair press down on him, a suffocating truth that smothers him with the knowledge that heâll never see anything outside the townâs limits again. Heâll never see home. Heâll never see his wife, his daughters. And hell, heâll never get the chance to write that damned novel.
Silly thoughts to have when so much is happening, but heâs torn from those notions when what sounds like a scream hits the airwaves. Mitch stops. Turns back. Faces the dinerâs direction once again.
âWhat is it?â Ellie asks.
âYou didnât hear that?â Mitch tunes out the other people scurrying past them, going about their workday, and listens for another shrill outburst. It doesnât come. âI heard someone scream.â
âLetâs keep moving,â Josh says to them.
âWhereâre we going?â Mitch asks, abandoning everything behind him, focusing on what lies ahead. âI mean, what the hell are we doing here?â
Josh shrugs in an Isnât it obvious? way. âYou heard Darla. The Mayorâs men are after us.â
âHow do we know sheâs telling the truth?â
Marissa steps in. âDarlaâs different.â
âHow?â Mitch snorts. âI mean, seriously? How is she different? Sheâs not like usâthatâs for damn sure.â
âShe warned us. Sheâs not one of them, trust me.â Marissa glances suspiciously at the passerby. âYou can almost tell that about people when you meet them.â
âWe shouldnât be discussing this out in the open,â Josh says. âToo many ears.â
Mitch has half a mind to turn back and discover what the scream was all about. âThis feels wrong.â
âWe need to hide out somewhere. Until this blows over.â
âBlows over?â Mitch canât believe what heâs hearing. âThis isnât going to blow over.â
Ellie steps in. âMitch is right. We can keep running, but eventuallyâ¦theyâll find us.â
âYou donât want them to find you,â Marissa says. âThatâs the point.â
âSo, we what?â Another incredulous laugh escapes him. âRun forever?â He shakes his head. âNah, fuck that.â
âWhat if they kill you?â Josh asks.
Mitch puts his hands on his hips. âThey wanted us dead, donât you think they would have killed us by now?â
âFair point,â Josh says, scratching his head.
âThey let us in here for a reason. And Iâm going to that clock tower to find out why.â He nods over his shoulder, back at Eddy, the towering structure that sits in the same position it had when they first arrived. The sun shines upon it, highlighting the structure in this golden, sparkling glow. Despite this angelic representation, the tower still inspires a nest of anxiety in the center of Mitchâs chest. âIâm going there, and Iâm going to meet the Mayor.â
âOh Jesus fuck,â Marissa says, looking away. âThatâsâ¦thatâs like a really bad idea, man.â
No one else says anything for a few seconds.
