ARIANA WAS MID-FLIGHT when she began to lose her shifting power. Her wings ached and her heart throbbed like it was being torn out by the roots.

Fearful for her life if she fell from the sky, she flew down immediately, not caring where she landed.

She began to shift about ten feet off the ground and landed naked in some harsh grass in the woods.

Tears clogged up her throat, and she finally let out the sob that she’d been holding on to since she left town.

Of all the betrayals, that had been the last thing she’d been expecting. How could Chase like men? Was he bi-sexual? Was Ben bi too? Or gay?

She didn’t get it at all. She was so confused. How could she compete with another man? And Chase’s best friend, at that.

She had no hope of being Chase’s mate if Ben wanted him too.

A small sob erupted and she allowed herself the pleasure of crying full tilt. Hot, salty tears coursed down her face and she let them fall unhindered.

She wrapped her arms around her naked body and let the shaking continue until she couldn’t cry anymore. When her tears were finally exhausted, she pulled herself over to a tree and leant back against its trunk.

What the hell was she going to do now? And where was she?

She took a shuddering breath and shook herself a little. This was not the time to fall apart, naked and nowhere near home.

“First, I need to get home and find some clothes.”

She shivered with cold, exhaustion and stress. But she needed to get home.

Ariana pushed herself to stand and closed her eyes. Her peregrine falcon visualised inside her mind, and her body transformed into the bird she’d been blessed to be.

She soon took flight and soared above the clouds.

Clothes. Warmth. Home. One step at a time.
