I knocked softly on Neal’s front door then waited with my hands clasped behind my back. Ms. Ramsey swung open the door not a minute later with a huge smile on her face.

“Josephine, honey, I haven’t seen you in so long!” Ms. Ramsey exclaimed, pushing her red locks out of her freckled face and stepped aside.

“I saw you at the mixer,” I said with a broad smile and a nonchalant wave of the hand. I walked past her and into the house. I was just about to go up the stairs when Ms. Ramsey spoke again.

“Before you go, I bought you and Neal some goodies. Wait here.” She left the room and went into the kitchen while I bounced on my toes, excited for the candy I was about to get.

Ms. Ramsey came back holding bags of gummy bears—my personal favorite—Twizzlers, and Starburst jelly beans. Why did she want to kill me? I went over to her, took the bags out of her arms before I leaned over to kiss her on the cheek.

“Thank you!” I squealed with excitement.

“You’re welcome. Don’t you dare eat all of it, save some for later?” she said with a scolding finger. I laughed, going up the stairs without promising anything.

I turned left and went straight to Neal’s bedroom door. I didn’t even bother knocking because what was his was mine.

Neal was stretched out on his bed, reading something called Gifted Hands by Ben Carson. I chuckled when I saw his t-shirt. It said, “Never trust an atom . . . they make up everything.” It was such a corny joke, but hilarious at the same time.

When he just continued reading, failing to notice my presence, I huffed and went over to him. I snatched the book out his hand then tossed it on his desk.

“Hey! I was reading—” Neal stopped talking mid-sentence when I dumped that candy on his lap. He stared at it with wide eyes. “Where did you get this gold mine?” he asked as he ripped out the bag of Twizzlers, sticking a couple in his mouth.

“Your mom gave them to me.” I took a couple out of the bag as well, putting them in my mouth, making them look like a walrus’ teeth.

He snatched them from my teeth and then tossed them at my face. I laughed, tossing them back, then his face turned somber.

“I’m sorry I left you at the party. It was stupid of me. I was pretty worried. So was Gwen.” Everyone apologizing to me made me happy; it was nice to see that they cared about me.

“It’s okay. You aren’t my babysitter, you know.”

“Yeah, I get that, but I just wanted to say I’m sorry.”

I tossed another Twizzler at him, which he quickly stuffed into his mouth. “Apology accepted.”

“Ready to get everything that’s in your mind off your chest?” Neal said with a mouth full of Twizzlers, and he told me not to talk with food in my mouth.

I shook my head. I didn’t think I was ready to confront my feelings.
