Chapter Seven

Melody

I felt like I was walking on a cloud as Will led me through a waltz in endless circles. His hand was wrapped firmly around mine, the pressure points of his fingertips against my knuckles warm and comforting. I stumbled a few times but Will merely tightened his hold on my waist to keep me upright and we fell into the rhythm again as easily as if we’d never missed a step.

“Now that you’re here,” he said. “Was it everything you always hoped for?”

“Everything and more.”

I didn’t know where to look. There was so much to take in, from the decorations, to the amazing amount of picture-perfect food, to Will right in front of me in his white tuxedo. I’d never seen him in a suit before and it was so hard not to stare.

“I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying yourself.”

His voice had dropped a little lower, quieter, taking on a husky quality. I wrenched my attention away from the room and back to Will in surprise. His gaze drifted over me with studious dedication, as if committing every inch of me to memory. It made my cheeks burn and my steps faltered.

My foot collided with Will’s toes. He grunted with a slight grimace, swearing under his breath. A surge of guilt washed over me.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!”

I clutched Will’s arm as he shifted in place.

“It’s fine,” he said. “No big deal. Let’s try that again.”

“But I—I stepped on your toes.”

He laughed softly, brushing his thumb along my jawline.

“Sweetheart, there’s no harm done. I promise.”

Sweetheart.

I couldn’t help but notice that Will never called me that before. He was using it more often lately though. And every time he said it, warmth swelled in my chest until I felt giddy and a little light-headed. It just sounded so good.

“Would you—I don’t know—do you need to sit down? I can get you some ice.”

“No,” Will said. Somehow, he was still laughing but I couldn’t shake my guilt. “Melody, baby, keep dancing with me. That’s all I want.”

I froze.

Melody, baby, keep dancing with me.

I thought those words were only reserved for my dreams, my wildest, most private fantasies that I didn’t even share with my best friend for fear I might lose them if I said them out loud. Will cupped his hand beneath my chin, tilting my head up to look at him.

“Wait,” he said softly. “That’s not entirely true.”

Barely daring to breathe, I waited for him to continue.

“I want more than that,” he whispered.

When Will skimmed his thumb across my lower lip, I didn’t pull away. Instead, I slid my shaky hands inside his jacket, looping my arms around his waist. It was a bold move for me, pressing us flush together, my breasts against his chest. But there was something about this dress and this party and the way Will was gazing at me that made it seem like anything was possible tonight.

“Fuck, Melody,” Will said, his voice a dry rasp. “You have no idea what you do to me when you look at me like that.
