Chapter Ten

“Is Nessa with you?” Drew bounded down the back steps.

“No,” Jesse answered. The look on Drew’s face told him something was terribly wrong and his heart rammed against his ribs.

“What’s wrong?” he and Livvy asked at the same time through the open truck window.

“We can’t find her.” Drew raked fingers through his hair, a wild look in his eyes. “We’ve looked everywhere.”

George carefully lowered himself down the steps. “She’s damn good at sneakin’ out. I’ll say that for her. Just like her Aunt Sara in her wilder days.”

Jesse flew from the truck and stood next to Livvy. “What the hell happened? We weren’t gone that long.” Panic was building a wild fire within him.

Drew spread his arms wide. “I don’t know. I went upstairs thinking I would look in on her to say goodnight. She wasn’t there. I didn’t worry at first, but then I checked the bathroom and the kitchen and when I called for her…nothing. Dad continued checking the house while I looked in the garage and around the outside. I was just getting my keys to head out to your place to see if she’d gone with Livvy.”

Livvy had a hand to her forehead. “It’s dark and she’s out there alone. Should we call the sheriff?”

Jesse pushed his fear aside. “Maybe we can find her first. For chrissake we’re seven miles from town. If that’s where she’s headed, she’s got to be on the road yet.”

George jammed his hands on his hips. “She could have gone either way. North would take her to town, but south would take her to the highway. Maybe she’s got some fool idea to hitch a ride back to the city. These young kids do the dumbest things.”

Drew moved toward his pickup. “I’ll head to town.”

Jesse went around the front of his truck. “Dad, you stay here in case she calls.”

“I’m going with you.” Livvy jumped into his truck and before she had her door closed, Jesse had the truck in gear.

The black of night engulfed the truck and dark shadows speared across the lonely road cut in two by the headlights of the slow moving truck. Massive trees encroached, black and menacing, on either side while ghostly swirls beckoned. A country song droned on in low volume from the radio. Jesse reached over and clicked it off.

“I should have never left her.” Jesse’s eyes darted back and forth in a steady cadence, searching, pleading for any sign his daughter was safe.

“Don’t blame yourself. You were blind-sided. She was so unhappy this afternoon, but I never suspected she’d run away.”

“That’s just it. She was upset and I go running off to the cabin to lick my wounds. What kind of father am I?”

“One who loves his daughter and is afraid he’s not going to do this right.”

“And look what happened. We’re not even one day into this and she’s run away while I’m out kissing you.” He heard the crack in his voice.

“That’s not important right now. We need to find her.
