Chapter Six: Chicago

O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

Theo paid the bill for our pancakes and helped me with my carry-ons. There wasn’t that much time before my next flight.

“Which way to the charter flights?” I asked.

“Don’t worry about me. I’ve got plenty of time to make sure you get to your gate.”

He took my suitcase and started off toward the terminal where the commuter flights took off. I stumbled along behind him.

“Okay. I think we’ll have to speed-date from here on out. Are you ready with your first question?”

“Are we on a date?” I asked.

“We ate food and I paid. I think that meets the qualifications for a date, by all international standards known to man.”

Not gonna lie. I was thrilled to know his qualifications for a date were the same as Julia’s. “So, this is a date?”

“You’re wasting questions,” he said. “So, I’ll start. What’s your favorite band?”

“One Direction.”

He shot me a look with his brows raised. It nearly took my breath away. “Not surprised, but greatly disappointed. You know they’re all a bunch of talentless wankers.”

“Seriously?”

“No. I’m kidding. They’re good guys. They’re my friends. I’m just seriously jelly you didn’t say me. I thought it was a question with an obvious answer.”

I dismissed his editorializing and focused on coming up with a really good question. “If you had a superpower what would it be?”

“X-ray vision.”

“Would you use it for good or for evil?”

He wiggled his eyebrows at me. “What do you think?”

I could feel a self-conscious blush spread from my head right down to my feet. “Who was your first Hollywood crush?”

“Jessica Rabbit.”

I snorted with laughter. “Good choice.”

“And you?”

“Elmo. “

“So then you’ve always been partial to ginger-haired boys?” he asked with a wink.

“I guess so,” I laughed. I couldn’t ever remember having so much fun or feeling so light-hearted in anyone’s company. “Do you believe in love at first sight?”

“Yes,” he said without hesitation, his gaze so intense I had to look away.

“Star Trek or Star Wars?”

“Star Wars.”

“Princess Leia or Marion Ravenwood?”

“Marion. She’s a total badass,” he said. “Are you left-handed or right-handed?”

“Left,” I said.

“Me too!” he shouted. “Chunky or smooth?”

“I hate peanut butter.”

“Dammit! For a moment there I thought we were separated at birth,” he said. “So, what’s your stance on cannibalism?”

“I’m not currently for it, but ask me again after I’ve been stuck on a deserted island for a few weeks. No. Wait. Maybe a couple of days. Not gonna lie. I’d consider it after a few hours without being in a clear line of sight of a Starbucks.”

“Remind me never to go on a tropical vacation with you.”

“What is your idea of a perfect vacation?”

“Wisconsin,” he said. “Milwaukee. In the summer. I hear the humidity is epic.”

I was blushing and feeling the butterflies again. “Is that your idea of a pick-up line?”

“No.” He grinned.

“What is your best pick-up line?”

“Best? Do you mean works best or sounds best?”

“Either.”

“Are you a tower?”

“What? No. Wait. Is that a question or your line?”

“Because Eiffel for you.” He waited, watching my face closely for a reaction.
