Chapter Eleven

Kira scrunched down in her nest of blankets before the hearth, jumping like a singed cat at the tread of boots outside the door. “Don’t unbolt it—might be them.”

“More likely to be Peter.” Laying aside her sewing, Aunt Alice rose from her chair.

The door rattled. “Wait to be certain,” Kira cautioned.

“Open up, woman! Can’t a man get into his own home?”

“Give a body half a shake.”

Kira wasn’t waiting that long. Ignoring the twinge in her knee, she flew to the door, slid the bolt and flung it wide. “Uncle Peter—” Coherent speech not immediately in her power, she hugged his reassuring bulk.

The surprised man closed his arms around her in return. “Don’t take on so, lass. No one’s suffering.”

Aunt Alice stepped beside them. “What happened at Campbell’s place?”

“Not as much as we would have liked. We left the fellow mad as a crazed hornet. Couldn’t find the stash of goods and turned the place upside down looking. ‘Rooted around like pigs,’ Campbell said, but he’ll not say it again.”

“Oh my,” his wife murmured.

“Reverend Wilkins kept us from too much mischief. Campbell declares thieves must have come by his place while he was over here and that accounts for the horse tracks.”

“You don’t believe that nonsense?” Aunt Alice was indignant.

“Not on your life, but we’ve got no proof to arrest him.”

“His sins will find him out. The Lord will see to it.”

“If the Lord doesn’t, Logan or I will.”

Still locked to her guardian, Kira asked,”Is he with you?”

“In the stable seeing to his horse.”

Aunt Alice gently detached her. “Let the man get his breath. Where all have you been, Peter? You were gone ages.”

“We went on to the Lewis place, left Reverend Wilkins there, and fetched Will back.”

“What about your supper?”

“They fed us royally. And it’s just as well we stayed on a while. As set as Will was on Kira, we had a time prying him away from Jenny. He can hardly wait to bed the girl.”

His wife colored. “Mind your tongue. Don’t speak so before the lass.”

“Won’t hurt her modesty none after the display she put on for the reverend.”

“She never meant to.”

“Likely not. That Logan’s a crafty one. At least Will’s seeing sense now, says it’s better to have the girl who wants him than one pining her heart out for another.”

Will’s teasing grin appeared through the door. “I heard about this afternoon, Kira.” Concern displaced his good humor. “What’s happened?”

“Kira’s had quite a scare,” his mother said.

Spying Logan at the base of the steps, she left Aunt Alice to explain and tore out the door and down the stoop, stumbling in her haste. He caught her as she lurched forward. If she could have, she would’ve wrapped her legs around him. As it was, she clung to him like a drowning woman. He held her close, seeming only mildly surprised at her near panic.

What now, Logan wondered. A horse ready to bolt couldn’t have seemed more frenzied. “Not that I mind, sweetheart, but why the anxious welcome—again?”

“Take me away now!”

“Barefoot, in your shift?”

She pulled back.
